Experiencing Growth

Lion, soft pastel
Golden Eyes
Soft Pastel, 15 x 12

Does your artwork experience growth? Mine often experiences horrific growth. What I mean by that, is that it keeps getting bigger and bigger, not better and better. This isn’t as bad as I thought, but my goodness that’s a large head.

I thought about getting bigger paper, but I’ve done that before, and the same thing happened. So I’ve started buying smaller sketchbooks in an effort to learn to draw smaller. I’m still waiting for those efforts to be successful.

Anyway, I decided to go ahead and finish him. My use of color isn’t great, and I figured it would make a good practice piece. Wanna know what I think? I think I do critters better than trees.

    Lisa,

I think you did a good job for being new to cats! I like the colors, but I’m a sucker for the blue/orange combo. :D

It’s a fairly good likeness to a lion! My main suggestion is to keep the level of detail consistent; the eyes and muzzle are very well-drawn and realistic, but the fur is a bit more blended, especially on the face (mane’s pretty good)! Making the level of detail more consistent might make his eyes “sit” in his face better.

I really like that muzzle, and the colors you used for shadows in the fur are great - picking up the background shades - and it gives the piece a lot of depth.

Thanks Meg. I’m trying to stop blending the pastels, but I always get carried away. Some people can blend these things, but when I do it, they flatten right out.

I really appreciate your input, and I’ll work on getting some fur put back on his face.

    I use the blue/orange color scheme a lot, don’t I? :D I like purple/orange too.
