Van Gogh: Project Wrap-Up

My idea for the Van Gogh project was to do a still life in the spirit of Van Gogh. I wanted to use the colors and subjects that were dear to Vincent, but not to try to copy him. I started by selecting colors and values from Still Life With Quince Pears and Vase With Twelve Sunflowers. My subject of course had to be sunflowers, just because they were Vincent’s favorite.

So, here it is, in all it’s glory, my project piece for the Van Gogh study group. The only Van Gogh-ish thing that’s still missing is a title, and it must have a title that Vincent would approve of. How about…

I also thought you might be interested to see how my gray-scale image compared to Van Gogh’s. Although it’s too dark, I was able to keep the values a lot closer than I thought I’d be able to do. And then there’s my ever-present shadows. I tried. I really did.

I’ve learned a lot about Van Gogh this month, and I hope it’s been as enjoyable for you as it has been for me. First, I’d like to thank:

The Fine Line Artists

Katherine Tyrrell

Maggie Stiefvater

Wendy Prior

Gayle Mason

Nicole Caulfield

for inviting readers to participate in their study. It’s been a lot of fun, and wouldn’t have been nearly as enjoyable on my own. I’d also like to thank the
Other Participating Artists

Rita Woodburne

Robyn Sinclair

Rose Welty

Casey Klahn

for their insights, many of which are quite humorous. If you’ve been busy and haven’t had a chance to check out the other’s contributions, I’ve re-posted the links, as I think they’re worth reading.

Next? I think I have just enough time for last week’s WDE before this week’s is posted.

Well done Lisa - that’s a really lovely pastel of sunflowers. That flatness he has is so odd isn’t it? I can’t understand why I never seemed to notice it until we started the project.

Thank you, Katherine. I agree, they’re very flat, and harder to emulate than I thought it would be. Van Gogh breaks the earliest art rules I ever learned: don’t draw lollipop trees; don’t draw lines radiating from the sun; don’t use heavy outlines… I love this guy.
