Sketchbook Seagulls

Nothing fancy today- just a sketch from the sketchbook. I’d planned on starting another pastel from this week’s WDE today, but decided to clean up the studio instead. I cleaned off all the pastels I used for the market scene and got them put away, and the dirty towels and chamois went into their own special wash me pile. I cannot start new work in a previous mess.

The seagulls are from the images posted for this weeks event, but after cleaning up the studio, I decided a pencil sketch was going to have to do for today. Hopefully I’ll get to the image I want to try before the next event starts, but at least I have something to share with the other participants this week if I don’t, and a clean studio to work in if I do.

WDE-Jan25-Gulls

I think what I like best about WetCanvas! is that artists from all over the world belong to it. These may look like ordinary seagulls, but these gulls are Canadian. They live at Beresford Beach in New Brunswick, and not available for photo-shoots locally.

Just started sketching seagulls myself….kicking myself for not paying more attention along the Cape Cod and Southern Irish beaches. Out with all the mediums to see what works best….pencil, tech pens, pastels, colored pencils, etc. Can you believe that people say they are bored….pick up a pencil…good luck with your work.

The subtle differences in bird bodies make them a lot harder than they look. Head and beak contours are critical in determining the species, and wings are very complicated structures. I use reference photos a lot!

You’ve got a great selection of tools- use all of them, & send me a linky. Blogger, Wordpress, & Moveable Type all offer free blogs, and Sitekreator.com has free web space for artists. -LB
